Przystanek Woodstock Festival, Poland

Przystanek Woodstock Festival
Friday 31st July to Sunday 2nd August 2009
Kostrzyn nad Odrą, Poland
Unbelievably free

Przystanek Woodstock is loosely linked with the original American Woodstock Festival of 1969, but I’ll be damned if I can figure out how. Michael Lang, one of the original event’s organisers, continued to recreate Woodstock Festivals on his own, one in ‘94, one in ’99, and another planned for the 40th Anniversary this year. Separate from this, a man named Jurek Owsiak seems to have watched the special edition live DVD and decided to name his festival what translates as ‘Woodstock Stop’. Polish humour perhaps.

Flagrant copyright issues notwithstanding, this event is ridiculously huge – ‘the biggest open-air festival in Europe’ no less. The lineup is thoroughly international and at first glance it may seem difficult to recognise any of the names. This is a good thing. Not all music comes from Britain and America, you know. Ones you might know are Sham 69, The Futureheads and Guano Apes.

Woodstock Stop = English translation, It’s not about humour, in Polish it means – Woodstock Stop (as a bus or train Stop) or Woodstock Break
