EXIT Festival, Serbia

This year marks the 10th Anniversary of one of Europe’s renowned festivals. Held in Serbia, around the fabulously named Petrovaradin Fortress, Exit Festival features some seriously major names. The Prodigy, Moby, Kraftwerk and Madness share the bill with The Manic Street Preachers, Lilly Allen, Korn and The Arctic Monkeys. The event will also see the return of Patti Smith and hip-hop legend, Grandmaster Flash.

As if this were not enough, a further 600 bands will play across 22 stages. This means that even if the headliners don’t grab you, the odds are good that someone you’ve never heard of will. One great feature of the event happens on the dance stage. Acts are paired-up to play back-to-back sets, adding an unusual competitive element to proceedings. In this way, Carl Cox will go up against Green Velvet and Dubfire takes on Richie Hawtin.

The point here is this: there are festivals all over Europe – all over the world for that matter and Exit Festival is notoriously good value for your money. For the price of a three-day Reading ticket, camping, travel and expenses, you could quite easily have four days in Serbia, an international music event with a stellar reputation, camping, flights and a suntan. Ask yourself; can any British event claim to have beach parties and a swimming area? Wakestock? You’re in North Wales. I mean proper beaches.

Widen your horizons. The world’s a big place and it’s filled with fantastic gigs. If you’re planning on going to a festival over here, take a good look at your European options. Exit Festival runs from the 9th to the 12th of July and is one certainly not to be missed this summer.
